HM Clause Offices

This international seed breeding, production and sales company combined its French and American factions into a new business unit located in Davis, California. CJA developed a program designed to bring local and international company executives together in a new lease space, introducing them to the open office plan concept which was foreign to many of them.

CJA designed the 10,800 square foot tenant improvement along with a full interior finishes package and worked closely with furniture vendors on both workstation furniture and casual seating selection. The plan includes private and open office space for 5 distinct departments, a large break room that channels the vibe of one’s favorite local coffee shop, numerous shared work rooms and support spaces. The result is a bright, vibrant and modern space debuting the company’s new corporate brand and colors.

UC Davis Center for Mind and Brain

The Center for Mind and Brain is a 23,000 square foot dynamic research and training facility dedicated to understanding the nature of the human mind. Established by the University of California at Davis, the Center boasts the use of cutting edge neurological testing equipment and provides large open labs, acoustically isolated behavior testing rooms and a training room with extensive AV amenities in which various studies and seminars are conducted. W

hen entering the space, visitors are welcomed to a "cafe" setting, a friendly and inviting environment featuring lounge seating, bistro tables and chairs. The kitchen area is enhanced using various architectural materials such as carpet, ceramic and glass tile insets, and glass block. A warm color scheme with bold accents is complementary and flows throughout the space.

UC Davis Outpatient Medical Clinic

The facility is part of the UC Davis Primary Care Network. The 18,400 square foot building replaced a clinic located in a multi-tenant office building. The clinic serves patients in the Rancho Cordova, Capital Village, Rosemont & Gold River areas. The building is located in a planned development retail center. As such, the architecture had to echo the style of the existing buildings within the center.


The clinic houses 32 exam rooms, procedure rooms, blood lab, x-ray suite, offices for 14 physicians, nurses stations for 12 nurses & office space for 20 additional staff. Finding the balance between the critical caregivers areas and the patient and family zones, was a main element in the design of this suburban Medical Clinic.


Soothing colors and space defining floor patterns flow outward from the active core open nursing stations, and into the patient rooms and waiting areas, providing a happy, uplifting environment for healing. The refreshing but calming neutral palette serves as a canvas for all the colors in the space; the blues, the greens, and the brown tones reflect the positive energy.

Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services Education Center

Designed to accommodate the Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services’ evolving program offerings, this 22,000 square foot Education and Technology Center was designed to accommodate maximum flexibility including 11 classrooms and multipurpose rooms with operable partitions.

The style of the building takes cues from the surrounding historic neighborhood as it sits next to the SFBFS headquarters in the heart of the Oak Park neighborhood of Sacramento. While traditional in form, the building utilizes contemporary materials to provide an affordable, sustainable and lasting structure.

Sacramento County Office of Environmental Management

This new two-story, 36,770 square foot administrative office facility includes a full plan review inspection and public counter spaces. It also serves as the Department Executive Branch, Administration, and Engineering Division Headquarters for all functions of the Environmental Health Division for Sacramento County.

Sustainable design features include:

Bayside Covenant Church

This church complex is comprised of three two-story structures; the larger is a multipurpose/sanctuary building, the second is an assembly/meeting room building, and the third houses a preschool and religious education rooms.


All three buildings serve a growing congregation of 5,000 plus in the East Roseville and Granite Bay neighborhoods. Meticulously programmed, planned, and designed for an extensive period, construction began in 2002 and completed in 2003. The buildings are constructed of splitface and precision CMU with defining/emphasis wall of "Silverado" Cultured Stone.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel

Comstock Johnson Architects (CJA) collaborated with former State Architect, Harry Hallenbeck on this one-thousand (1,000) seat sanctuary building. The design is organized around two large cylindrical forms, one at the narthex and the other at the altar, and sloping roof wings symmetrically placed on either side. The exterior materials are predominantly cement plaster walls with metal roof panels that span as far as sixty-five (65) feet. A large art glass glazed opening is placed at the back of the reservation chapel as a focal element.

Divine Mercy Parish

This new Parish is the first permanent church to serve a Sacramento's growing North Natomas area. This New Facility Master Plan includes a Parish Center, K-8 school, and an 800-seat final church on approximately eight acres. The approximately 11,600 square foot, Phase-1, 600-seat
"First Church" (future Parish Center which is sized for a high school basketball court) was completed in October 2009.


The buildings were designed in a "Mediterranean" style with large slump block walls consistent with surrounding complexes. The mechanical system uses economical, high-efficiency package units hidden into roof wells above the front support spaces. All buildings will face onto a large, shared, connecting plaza allowing pedestrians to go between church, school and gym without crossing vehicle traffic.

St Stephen the First Martyr Parish

St. Stephen the First Martyr Parish is the fruit of 20 years effort by the Latin Mass Community of Sacramento. They offer a full parochial observance of the Sacred Liturgy, including three Masses per day, Vespers and Compline every week, as well as any Catholic devotions, making St. Stephen's the premier traditional parish in the State of California. Their community is "a family of families" entered on the Blessed Eucharist.


This project was a significant remodel of a previous Lutheran Church. Primarily new finishes and lighting along with a completely redesigned Sanctuary with fixtures salvaged from mid-west Catholic churches.

UCDHS Specialty Testing Center

The UC Davis Medical Center established this clinical testing lab in an effort to unify several testing labs, upgrade their equipment, and move off the main medical center campus.

The program consists of a front office, lab space, and training facilities in 27,000 square feet. While bringing many separate labs into one open environment, the space also provided a warm environment for employees. The project included the design of extensive modular laboratory casework with fume hoods and equipment coordination. An emergency generator system was also designed.

SunWest Rice Mill

A high capacity rice mill billed as “California’s Largest Rice Mill” in 2002 with a significant export business to Japan as well as domestic distribution. The “L” shaped facility consists of a 45,000 square foot rice and by-product processing area along the long side of the “L” and a 30,000 square foot packaging and warehouse operation on the short side. The structure stands 53 feet tall with tilt up concrete walls for the first 25 feet and a pre-engineered metal frame structure on top of that. In addition, a 1,100- foot rail spur was built off a Union Pacific main line running parallel alongside the plant. The plan is set up to load up to seven or eight covered hopper cars at a time for shipment throughout North America.


Most of the equipment was manufactured by Buhler, Inc. and significant coordination was necessary during layout, utility connection and millwright work. The dynamic loads due to rapidly shaking equipment placed on the second floor structure were of particular concern. A cast-in-place concrete floor provided the best solution and prevented floor movement during operations. Additional design elements included access catwalks and equipment platforms where necessary.


Project delivery was negotiated select team and Unger Construction Company was the general contractor.

Bounce Spot

The Bounce Spot, children's play and party facility with giant inflatables, promotes fun, excitement and entertainment through the use of strong, vibrant colors and patterns that flow continuously throughout the space. From the dramatic lobby with the custom reception station and tile insets, to the party rooms and multi-colored inflatable arenas, the facility is a celebration of energy for kids of all ages.

Capri Creek Apartments

Capri Creek Apartments consists of 100 units, located on five acres, near the Branch campus of Santa Rosa Junior College in Petaluma, California. The project incorporates a Mediterranean architectural theme through the use of cement plaster walls, tile roofs, and various building forms that are articulated by a multitude of exterior wall colors. The units themselves, ranging in size from 710 square feet to 1,300 square feet, and one to three bedrooms, are designed in a flow through plan with outdoor patios and balconies, arranged to take advantage of orientation and views.

The complex includes numerous amenities, such as a full service clubhouse with fitness center, pool, spa, and meeting rooms. Also, cable and internet ready connections are provided in every unit within the apartment community. Other highlights are the numerous outdoor gathering spaces, an outdoor barbeque area and a children's play area with built-in playground equipment.

Plumas Lake Golf and Country Club

This 7,700 square foot full service clubhouse and meeting facility, was constructed as a replacement building for the original, 1993 flood ravaged, clubhouse. The new building includes a full service commercial kitchen, separate sports bar, dining room, and conference/meeting rooms for up to four simultaneous groups of 240 persons each. The building also includes administrative offices and golf meeting spaces. The structure is wood framed and was designed to match an existing pro shop building that was recently reconstructed. Also incorporated into the project is over 2,700 square feet of covered outdoor patio space.

Farberware Cookware Manufacturing Building

This project consists of the first phase of a one million square foot masterplan. The building is approximately 340,000 square feet and utilizes a pre-engineered interior structure to achieve 30 feet of clear height. The perimeter walls are composed of concrete tilt-up wall panels that are articulated with detailed reveal patterns and color variety to achieve a pedestrian scale facade in a massive distribution facility.

The building functions as the primary distribution facility for Farberware Cookware and also provides a small amount of manufacturing functions. The phase one project was completed ahead of schedule and below the owner's original budget.
